O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She was able to advance to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performance. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the bottom three once again. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's history . O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
